Tommy Trojan

Tommy Trojan

“Tommy Trojan,” a life-size bronze statue of a Trojan warrior, was unveiled on June 6, 1930, as part of USC’s 50th birthday celebration. Sculpted by Roger Noble Burnham and originally called the Trojan Shrine, this University Park campus landmark was modeled after several different USC football players. On the statue’s granite pedestal are inscribed the qualities of the ideal Trojan: “FAITHFUL, SCHOLARLY, SKILLFUL, COURAGEOUS, AMBITIOUS.” (Interestingly, USC’s “Trojan” tradition originated in February 1912, when Los Angeles Times sportswriter Owen Bird likened the fighting spirit of the university’s track and field team to that of the ancient Trojans.)
